Pen Hadow, expedition leader on the 2009 Catlin Arctic Survey, takes a series of measurements from the ice. The expedition was interested in the ice thickness, snow thickness, snow and ice density and the temperature of the snow. This meant walking across the frozen Arctic ocean and drilling holes after a long day to take scientific readings.
