Building tall towers has been at the centre of human endeavour for millennia, and persists today from toddlers’ toys to modern city skylines. This live lesson looks at how it is possible to build taller and taller buildings that are safe, stable, and allow for denser populations.

We visit a building site to find out how tall buildings are designed and the choices that construction engineers make. This is put into practice with a joint tower building activity, followed by Q&A.

Science KS2 (ages 7-11): materials choices; forces and levers.

D&T KS2 (ages 7-11): design against criteria; select and use materials; apply knowledge to make structure stronger and more stable
