Frank Pope, the Oceans Correspondent for The Times, was one of the visitors to the Ice Base. This picture of him shows how most of the team woke up in the morning. During the night, your breath freezes on the inside of the tent and around the hood of your sleeping bag. If you move at all in the morning, you knock all the ice on your face.

Every morning the team would put their sleeping bags on the washing line. This was to get rid of the ice that may have built up overnight. Instead of melting into water, the ice sublimes straight to water vapour, leaving the sleeping bags ice free for the next night's sleep.

Tuk, the Ice Base camp dog in 2011, would follow the expedition team around as they conducted their research, just making sure that everything was ok.

Because of the cold, the team didn't wash very often. Dr Helen Findlay has just washed her hair in a bucket on a sunny day. As soon as she rinses out the shampoo, her hair freezes instantly.

Each member of the team had individual skills that defined the role they played in the team at the Ice Base. Among important skills to have are qualities such as resilience, tolerance and a good sense of humour!

The team were on the ice for the Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton. It held the most northerly 'street party' in the world to mark the moment. This photo and a short video of the toast were circulated around the world by the media.

In the evenings the team played Scrabble, cards or chatted.

Beaker is the slang term used on polar expeditions to describe scientists. Polar scientists aren't normal people. They are born inside the ice and then they are carefully dug out so that they can do their research.

Tuk, the camp dog, was great for camp morale. His main job was to protect the team from polar bears, but he kept the scientists and other team members company as they went about their work.
