Resources and reach
Since 2011, four sets of resources have been produced for geography and science: Our Ocean Planet, Frozen Oceans, Coral Oceans, and Submarine STEM. Cumulatively, these have had significant reach and impact in classrooms across the world.
This is combined with over 1.5 million views of 360VR content.
Live events
Since 2014, AXA Ocean Education (formerly XL Catlin) has delivered seven live events from the Arctic and coral reefs. With temperatures ranging from -40C to +40C, the field education teams have answered 16,000 questions from over 1,800 schools live via video link, racking up an amazing 492 hours of live expedition broadcast. Over 200,000 students have been part of these learning events.
"After the live session, we had a long discussion about water pollution with plastics and we are all going to try our hardest to pick up rubbish especially if we go to the beach."
Classroom impact
- Over 80% of teachers agree or strongly agree that the resources enhance ocean literacy.
- Over 90% of teachers state that is important or very important for resources to be based on real science and research.
- 70% of teachers cite it as very important that partnerships with academic institutions can deliver videos and galleries based on real research and case studies.
- 94% of teachers value the accuracy of the resources that have been created.
Awards & recognition
Among other awards, AXA Ocean Education has been recognised through Encounter Edu's receipt of the 2020 BETT Awards Best Free Educational Resource, 2019 Silver Award Geographical Association and was a finalist for the 2020 EdTech Awards Cool Tool and shortlisted for the 2019 Teach Primary Awards. The work was also recognised by receipt of the Association for Science Education's Green Tick evaluation:
This is a tremendous resource, which covers a range of topical science issues and curriculum content, in a highly engaging way. The resources go way beyond the dry science and bring in varied rich contexts that just could be light bulb moments for youngsters as they develop their ambitions for the future.
