Lesson overview

Students will develop their knowledge of what data is and how to record and present it accurately. They will go on to answer one and two-step questions about the data presented in bar charts, pictograms and tables.

Learning outcomes
  • Record and collect data
  • Present data
  • Use bar charts, pictograms and tables

Expedition Prep Checklist

Download the Google Expeditions App on all devices and select expedition; Underwater Excursion.

Explore the expedition and locate points of interest; Saunders Reef, Komodo Island, Isla Contoy, Heron Island, Galapagos Islands and Benwood.

Lesson steps
  1. Introduction (10 mins)
Ask students to discuss what data is and how we can collect and record it. Explain what is meant by ‘interpreting data’. Explain that the students are going on an expedition under the sea to look at the wildlife and that as the students explore the different environments they will have to record the different types of animals they see. Model recording data using the Student Sheet in the Lesson resources section and guide students to complete exercise 1. Challenge students to use squared paper to create their own idea for recording data.
  2. Expedition (20 mins)
Lead the expedition pausing every minute to allow students to record their observations, using the table under exercise 2 on the Student Sheet.
  3. Activity (30 mins)
Students select their three favourite fish from the expedition and complete exercise 3, using pictograms to illustrate how many they saw. Students colour in then cut out the fish provided and stick them into the table. Students to draw graphs reflecting the three levels of challenge:
    i. Pictogram (given scale and axis).
ii. Pictogram (need to decide upon scale and draw axis).
    iii. Bar chart.
  4. Extension
Students select a topic, then record and represent data using the following techniques:
    • Pictogram (given scale and axis)
    • Pictogram (need to decide upon scale and draw axis)
    • Bar chart
