Ratio and data collection

Part of:

Google Expeditions
Lesson overview

Students will develop their understanding of data collection techniques and find the ratio of one thing compared to another. They go on to solve problems involving the relative sizes of two quantities.

Learning outcomes
  • Record and collect data
  • Calculate ratios
  • Interpret data
  • Answer questions related to data displayed in a variety of formats

Expedition Prep Checklist

Download the Google Expeditions App on all devices & select expedition 5 Pointz Queens.

Explore the expedition and locate points of interest; Loading dock, The artists.

Lesson steps
  1. Introduction (10 mins)
Introduce the expedition and explain the lesson focus and outcomes. Students complete exercise one on the Student Sheet, found in the Lesson resources section. Encourage students to suggest their own ratios and model collecting data.
    • Chairs / Tables
    • Shoes / Feet
    • Long haired / short haired students
    • Blue / Green / Brown / Grey eyed students
Model recording data using accompanying resource. Explain that they will be using the Google Expeditions app and VR headsets to look at different locations in New York, and practice collecting data, finding ratios and applying this knowledge. Discuss the location.
  2. Expedition (20 mins)
Lead exploration of ‘The artists’ expedition. Discuss the tags (the bolder, more colourful pieces above the murals) and direct students to collect data about the tags to calculate ratios about all the graffiti.
Model data collection using the recording table. Students complete sections 1-6 of the table on exercise 2 on the Student Sheet. Then lead exploration of ‘The Loading Dock’ expedition.

Students work in mixed ability pairs to collect data and complete the exercise 2 table on the Student Sheet. Students choose the data they record. For example, cars are a good focus point (colours, direction they’re facing, where they’re parked, etc.)
  3. Activity (30 mins)
Students complete the remaining questions below the table on the Student Sheet. Lead class activity discussing findings with students and talking through their answers.
  4. Extension
    Students solve the following problems:
  • There are 63 artists at 5 Pointz. For every 2 artists wearing black tops there are 5 artists wearing sport shirts. How many artists are wearing black tops?
  • Two graffiti artists, Tom and Ali, share some spray paint in the ratio 3:5. The first one, Tom, gets 24 more tins of spray paint than Ali does. How many tins of spray paint did they share in total between them?
