Convex Seascape SurveyThese activities introduce young children to whales and their important role in ocean health through hands-on creative activities. Children will learn about different whales, what they eat, and how they help keep our oceans healthy. The workshop is designed for groups of 4-6 children and uses storytelling, craft, and collaborative work to engage young learners.
Gather children around the table
Show pictures of sperm and humpback whales
Ask what they know about whales
Introduce the idea that whales are ocean helpers
Ocean life colouring sheets
Distribute whale colouring sheets
Talk about what each whale eats while colouring
Help children identify different whale parts
Toilet paper roll whales & squid
Make simple whale or squid models
Add details like eyes and fins
Creating a display
Add the ocean life pictures, and ocean and squid models to your ocean poster.
Decorate the poster, drawing waves and other ocean shapes.
Give your poster a title like “Whales help keep our ocean healthy!”
Some younger children may need help with using scissors safely, cutting out the template, and taping and glueing accurately
Use child-safe scissors appropriate for the child's age
Supervise internet research for whale photographs if children are looking these up
Work on a clean, clear surface with enough space for materials
Be mindful of any allergies to craft materials (some adhesives, etc.)
