In this lesson students will create a fact file and tourism brochure all about Angel Falls, in Venezuela. They will answer key questions about the waterfall including, looking at the location of the waterfall and the significance of it.

Lesson steps
  1. Introduction (10 mins)
    Establish students’ prior knowledge of Angel Falls, where it is located and why is it significant.
    Explain that students will be learning about Angel Fall and creating a fact file.
  2. Expedition (20 mins)
    Students to complete the Student Sheet, in the Lesson resources section and create a fact file about Angel Falls. Students should think about the following information: Why is Angel Falls so special? Why is it described as a hidden wonder? Should it be known by its current name, Angel Falls or the name that the indigenous people who live near it have called it for hundreds of years Kerepakupai Merú? Is the visit worth the long journey?
  3. Activity (30 mins)
    Students to create a brochure for tourists. The brochure should include a map to show where Angel Falls is located, a description of how the site was discovered and have information on how to get there.
  4. Extension
    Students imagine a conversation between Jimmy Angel and Ernesto Sánchez La Cruz (a Venezuelan explorer who discovered the Waterfall in 1912). Research the two men and write a dialogue between the two. Consider, if Ernesto might have been angry with Jimmy? Is Jimmy embarrassed by the fact that the falls are named after him. Do they reach an agreement, or do they end the conversation angry?
