Lesson steps
  1. Introduction (10 mins)
    Students research the following online:
    • What is the location of Nouabalé-Ndoki?
    • Is DRC an LEDC? What indicators did you use to come to that conclusion?
    • What are the threats to wildlife and habitat in LEDCS?
Students produce a fact file entitled threats to biodiversity in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
  2. Expedition (20 mins)
Lead the expedition using the scene descriptions, points of interest and answering the questions at an appropriate level to the class. Students are immersed in the expedition.
  3. Activity (30 mins)
Students watch this video from the Congo.
Students imagine they are Règis, a 22 yr old Eco gaurd in Nouabalé-Ndoki. Students write a diary entry for the 22nd of June.
The diary entry includes the following themes:
    • The risk that he takes to protect the Gorillas from poaching
    • The difficulties he encounters in his job
    • His reasons for doing the job
    • His hopes for the Gorilla's future and the future of the forest
  4. Extension
Students create an advertisement for a tour of Nouabalé-Ndoki. It can be for magazine, a radio, or TV. It should emphasise the scenery, the wildlife and the benefits of sustainable tourism for the local economy.
