Lesson steps (numbered / title / (minutes)
  1. Introduction (20 mins)
Assess students' prior knowledge of heart diseases. What heart diseases / problems do you know about? What do you think causes these problems?
Explain that heart disease can be caused by problems in the blood supply, cardiac muscle or SA / AV nodes. Students watch:
  2. Expedition (20 mins)
Distribute cardiovascular disease cards (see Student Sheet) allocating one to each student.
Students document the following information for each disease: Which part(s) of the heart is / are affected? What is the role of this / these part(s) of the heart? How does their function / structure change if a person has this disease?
Students explore the scene relevant to their disease. Students sketch or capture a screenshot of the ‘normal’ area of the heart and then annotate and label it showing what happens to the structure of the heart when it has the disease on their card.
Students use the website list on the worksheet for extra information. Students exchange the cards at least three times to have information about three diseases.
  3. Activity (20 mins)
Lead class discussion around which cardiovascular diseases are caused by problems in the muscles, arteries, valves, SA or AV nodes?
Students circulate and share information with others with different diseases. Students work in pairs to produce a poster leaflet about their disease to be displayed in a Doctor’s surgery.
  4. Extension
Students research treatment for their disease. Students research heart transplants and write about advantages and disadvantages. Students research designs for artificial hearts and evaluate their effectiveness / usefulness.
