Introduction to Biomes

Lesson overview

In this lesson students will complete research about different biomes, such as Tundra, Taiga, Desert, Savannah, Temperate forest and Tropical rainforest. They will develop their ability to consolidate their research as they have to write a 100-word piece of writing for each biome studied.

Lesson steps
  1. Introduction (10 mins)
    Establish students’ prior knowledge of biomes. Students to watch and Introduction to Biomes.
    Explain that students will be learning about different biomes including then Tundra, Taiga, Desert, Savannah, Temperate forest and Tropical rainforest.
  2. Expedition (20 mins)
    Students to use the expedition as well as other sources of information to make notes of the climate; precipitation and temperature as well as plants and animals of each biome.

    Students to use the information found to write a 100-word piece of creative writing for each biome, imaging that they are a pilot stranded in the desert after their plane crashed or a game warden in the Savannah.
    Writing should describe: the plant and animals; the temperature; humidity; clothing they are wearing or what they were wearing.
  3. Activity (30 mins)
    Students to select a plant or an animal from each biome, they are then to explain how the plant or animal has adapted to fit the ecosystem of the biome they live in.
  4. Extension
    Students to complete some research and find the meaning of the word biome and explain what a anthropogenic biomes are.
