Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of fractions by using Google Expeditions to look at different locations, and use real data to find fractions of amounts.

Lesson steps
  1. Introduction (10 mins)
    Students should have a working knowledge of fractions and fractions of amounts for this lesson. Explain that students are exploring New York City to apply their knowledge of fractions. Before the expedition, model the collection of data and representing it as a fraction using exercise 1 on the Student Sheet found in the Lesson resources section.
  2. Activity one (15 mins)
    Set up the activity; go through the example in exercise 1 and lead the activity in an open space. Students will need to bring their Student Sheets with them. Direct the students that agree with the statements to walk to a designated area then announce the number who agree with the statement. Students record data in the first table on the Student Sheet. The go through the statements on the Student Sheet or edit with your own ideas.
  3. Expedition (20 mins)
    Lead the expedition to 5 Pointz explaining the history of the building and guiding students around the scenes. Return to ‘The artists’ scene. Students complete the data collection, using exercise 2 on the Student Sheet. Students then answer the questions below the table.
  4. Activity two (15 mins)
    Students work in pairs and assess their peers by comparing their work. Show model answers on the board. Students then to self-assess their work.
  5. Extension
    Students practice multiplication and work out the percentages for the first 'I would rather' exercise.
