The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is one of the longest reef systems in the world at over 900km long, 300km of which runs down the entire length of the Belizean coastline. This section is home to one of the most famous dive sites in the world - The Blue Hole.

The last 30 years have been devastating for some areas of the Mesoamerican Reef (and coral reefs worldwide) with hurricane damage, coral bleaching, pollution and over-fishing causing mass coral reef destruction. However, the health of the reef appears to have plateaued and the coral, which was almost lost in this area, has made a surprising re-emergence.
