Did you know that we only know about 10 per cent of the species that live in the ocean? Scientists believe that an estimated 2 million species are waiting to be found. Until now, the process of discovering and naming new ocean life has changed little since the 1800s, with an average of 2,300 new species being scientifically described each year. This rate is insufficient if we are to meet the challenges of the climate and biodiversity crises. Ocean Census is a moonshot initiative that will change this.
