Arctic food web
This food web live lesson introduces young people to the interdependence of living things in the Arctic. Students will review key terms in describing feeding relationships between living things, before connecting them in a food web. Last, students will consider what impact environmental change may have on life in the Arctic.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, AXA Arctic Live 2021 live lessons will be delivered as a virtual event, with speakers joining from where they are, rather than from the UK's Arctic Research Station.
Preparation
If you have never joined a live lesson before, see the guidance hub, where you will find technical and educational support.
Live lessons work best when students have some prior knowledge and have prepared questions. You can select from any of the STEAM activities in the Frozen Oceans collection or teach a one-off Arctic Live Prep Lesson.
Questions generated by your class can be submitted via the Encounter Live tab in your Encounter Edu profile.
This lesson is based around the Arctic food web activity and if your students are following live, you will need to gather these activity resources in advance.
Session outline
1. Introduction (5 mins)
Jamie will open the session with a welcome and brief introduction to the expedition and any shout-outs to registered classes.
In this live lesson, students will develop their knowledge of food webs and why they are important in understanding life in a changing Arctic.
2. The most important animal (5 mins)
Jamie will introduce some of the animals found near the UK’s Arctic Research Station on Svalbard, and ask students which they think is the most important. Students will be able to reflect on their answers later in the lesson.
3. Subject knowledge (5 mins)
Jamie will review some of the key terms needed to describe food webs and feeding relationships.
4. Food web activity (15 mins)
Jamie will guide students through completing the food web activity using the activity guide attached to this lesson. If students will be completing this activity during the lesson, materials and resources will need to be gathered in advance. This section of the lesson will end with a discussion around the potential impact of environmental change on the Arctic food web, as well as reflecting on what might be the most important animal in the Arctic.
5. Q&A and conclusion (15 mins)
After completing the activity Jamie will be able to answer pre-submitted questions and take part in the live chat. At the end of the broadcast, Jamie will suggest some other activities you might like to try and what's coming up in the rest of Arctic Live 2021.
