Diving off the wall

Due to the ongoing outbreak of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Wave Actions and Reactions lesson has been replaced with this broadcast, and as such questions cannot be answered during the dive.
An expert educator live in the Cayman Islands will answer questions and give shoutouts live to students once the dive has ended.

This broadcast will be along the edge of the vertical wall which goes from 20ft to 2000ft. The underwater educator will communicate constantly with the lesson host (who will be on the boat). The educator will take the students through a series of fun facts and learning objectives regarding the geologic and oceanographic history of the “wall” and Little Cayman.

Students will have an in-class activity to complete during the lesson. The dive will observe changes in ecosystems at various depths including: small niches, large expanses of vertical wall, and blue water communities along the wall. Pre-recorded footage and images will be used to show changes in geology and oceanography over time, as we are only able to show a snapshot of what reefs look like today during the broadcast.

Broadcast on Thu 19 Mar 2020
  • 60 mins
  • Ages 7-11
Preparation

Prepare for this live lesson by reviewing the attached learning resources. Don't forget to submit questions in advance via the Live Lesson tab in your user profile, once you have booked the lesson. These questions will be answered and any shoutouts will be featured by a coral expert live in the Cayman Islands after the lesson itself has finished.

Learning Objectives
  • Define plate tectonics and the Mid-Ocean Ridge.

  • Describe the change in life and underwater communities along the Cayman Trough at various depths.

  • Explain why an animal may live on the wall instead of in a shallow reef.
  • Analyse the changes in the wall throughout the dive: number of sponges, amount of algae, colour of the corals, size of the fish, etc.
  • Discuss how the famous “wall” of the Cayman Islands was formed.
Live lesson outline

1. Introduction (5 mins)

The CCMI host welcomes students and outlines the lesson, introducing the educator and the in-class activity

2. The Cayman trench and the 'wall' (5 mins)

The educator will take the students through a series of fun facts and learning objectives regarding the geologic and oceanographic history of the “wall” and Little Cayman.

3. A guided tour (5 mins)

The underwater educator will take students on a tour of the wall at various depths.

4. Questions (5 mins)

At this point, the educator will answer common questions about the diving, the Cayman trench and coral in general. This is a good time to also submit any questions to the live chat, where a coral educator in the Cayman islands is waiting to answer you.

5. The bottom of the sea (5 mins)

Educator explains change in the oceans benthic habitat based upon basic geologic and oceanographic theory.

6. Questions (10 mins)

The educator then engages students to report their observations from the different environments along the wall.

7. Questions (5 mins)

At this point, the educator will answer more common questions about the diving, the Cayman trench and coral in general. This is a good time to also submit any questions to the live chat, where a coral educator in the Cayman islands is waiting to answer you.

8. Final questions and recap (5 mins)

The CCMI host recaps the learning objectives and concludes the lesson.

9. Live Shoutouts and questions (15 mins)

Once the lesson broadcast has ended, a coral expert will come onto camera togive live shoutouts and answer pre-submitted and live questions sent in using the live chat function.
