What we can learn:

In the European Union, close to a third of electricity produced is from renewable sources, including wind, solar, hydroelectric and other such sources.

Oil represents the smallest source of electricity, whilst non-renewables such as coal, gas and oil still make up over forty percent of the electricity production. Nuclear power is still a large contributor. In France, nuclear power makes up over 70% of its energy mix.

What we can learn:

In the United Kingdom, fossil fuels make up over half of the electricity production - bigger than the European Union as a whole.

Just under a quarter of electricity is renewable at source. The United Kingdoms' electricity production is less renewables than the average EU country.

What we can learn:

In the Netherlands a massive 81% of electricity comes from gas or coal. Renewable electricity sits at just under 13%, a small slice of the matrix.

The Netherlands, has a far less renewable electricity production than the EU as a whole.

What we can learn:

Despite the Netherlands' lack of renewable production, it represents a very small amount - the United Kingdom sources more electricity from gas than the Netherlands does from any source.

This graph shows clearly the amount of electricity produced in the EU - a grouping of 28 (at time of writing) developed European countries.

What we can learn:

Although we learned that the Netherlands electricity production is very small in comparison with the UK, here we can see things from a new angle. Per capita means for each person, and means that the Netherlands produces more electricity per person at around 6.8 MWh per person than the EU as a whole, while the UK is significantly lower at just over 5.2MWh per person.

This means that less electricity is produced in the UK for each resident than in the Netherlands.
