Assistant Professor of Tropical Marine Biology
Jasper de Goeij is a marine biologist at the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamic (UvA-IBED). For over five years, Jasper has been investigating the role of coral cavities (the coral reef’s framework) in the nutrient cycling (organic and inorganic) of the tropical coral reef ecosystem; especially the important role of encrusting sponges, inhabiting the cavities.
De Goeij suspects that sponges may play a more important role in marine ecosystems and marine carbon cycles than previously thought.
