CARMABI strives to contribute to the sustainable development and management of the natural resources in the Caribbean region through research, nature management and environmental education. Established in 1955 as a marine research institute, Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity (CARMABI) has 4 pillars on which it works; scientific research on both marine and terrestrial ecological subjects, nature management of marine and terrestrial parks, environmental education, public advise and consultancy to third parties. Today CARMABI provides facilities and logistical support to upwards of 70 visiting researchers and graduate students per year, manages nine protected areas on Curaçao , the largest of which is the 1,860-hectare Christoffelpark, and runs an educational program reaching about 12,000 school children per year.

International Year of the Reef 2018 (IYOR2018) : IYOR2018 has been created to increase public awareness is an essential element of coral reef conservation, and is necessary to ensure that the value of, and the threats to, coral reefs are understood by the general public. Initiatives must reflect national and regional priorities as well as local culture, knowledge and must facilitate public involvement in coral reef conservation related activities. ICRI members adopted a recommendation on continuing coral reef awareness efforts during IYOR.

National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is the UK’s main Centre for study of the global ocean, continental shelves and the deep sea. It conducts research into ocean circulation, sea-level rise, ocean chemistry and biology, the processes on and under the ocean floor and how these all interact. The NOC operates the UK’s two large oceanographic research ships Discovery and James Cook and develops advanced technologies for exploring the oceans such as robotic submersibles.

From 1 April 2018, NERC is part of UK Research & Innovation, a non-departmental public body funded by a grant-in-aid from the UK government.
