Going deeper
In the first part of this session Jamie demonstrates the relationship between pressure and depth with a simple activity called Under pressure. The second part of the session helps students investigate the relationship between Depth and light before discussing how this might affect deeper corals.
Session steps
- Introduction (5 mins)
Jamie will open the session with a welcome and brief introduction to the expedition. - Subject knowledge (10 mins)
He will then explain how pressure increases with depth and discuss the implications for deep-sea exploration. During this time, you can distribute the resources to students and they can make predictions about how the water might behave during the experiment. - Activity one (10 mins)
Jamie will begin demonstrating the activity, students can follow along in real-time. At this point, you can submit your students’ questions via the Live chat. - Subject knowledge (5 mins)
Moving on to the next activity Jamie will explain how the relationship between depth and available light affects deeper corals and will talk briefly about the Science Journal app. Distribute resources and encourage students to make predictions about how the light sensor might be affected each time water is added to the container. - Activity two (10 mins)
Jamie will begin demonstrating the activity, students can follow along in real-time. Don’t forget to submit your students’ questions via the Live chat. - Q&A and conclusion (5 mins)
After completing the activity Jamie will answer some of the questions students have submitted before suggesting other Coral Live activities you might like to try.
