Fran, the Ice Base chef, packs the eggs for the expedition at the hotel in Resolute Bay. The eggs are cracked into jugs and frozen to make storage easier. Can you tell from the empty boxes, how many eggs the team of nine got through in seven weeks?

Fran Orio, the Ice Base chef, wraps string around the ice chisel to use as a grip. String provides grip even when it is wet. When the scientists chip out their sampling holes, they attach their ice chisels by a strap to their wrist. This is to avoid losing them down the hole if they were to slip out of their grasp.

During the 2011, Ice Base expedition, the team ate 1,464 meals as well as snacked a lot during each day. The team averaged about 5,000 calories a day which is twice the recommended amount for an adult male. Here's a tip for you, in the Arctic, you need extra calories to keep warm.

In this photograph, Carolyn Bailey, the Ice Base guide, shows off her sleeping system. Not only did the team have four sleeping bags, they also had three mattresses each. You can see two foam mattresses at the bottom, one yellow and one blue. On top of this is an inflatable mattress which had a filling of goose down. Insulation from the ground is important to prevent body heat being conducted away by the ice.

If anything went wrong with any of the science equipment, it would have been a long way to go and get it fixed. Nothing could be left to chance and the team spend time checking and testing all their equipment in Resolute before they travelled to the Ice Base.
