The team would wear a series of layers during the expedition as this helped them to regulate their warmth. A fleece jacket, like this one, would be worn on top of a base layer and then a windproof layer on top of this. Wearing layers of clothing makes it easier to regulate temperature, taking a layer off or putting one on as necessary. It would be much more difficult if the team members just wore one huge item of clothing.

Wearing a balaclava minimises the amount of exposed skin. This decreases the risk of frost nip and frost bite. Extremities such as the nose and ears need to looked after.

Moisture management is one of the things that the team had to look out for. If they were too warm, they would sweat and the moisture would then freeze inside their clothing, so they would be working wearing blocks of ice. A down jacket was very useful to keep warm in the evenings and when resting.

Down trousers are very warm, and they were mainly used in the evenings. The team would get too warm if they used them for work.

This is an example of one of the types of gloves that the team used. They are useful for doing jobs around camp. In addition, many team members had large mitts to keep warm when not working or in cold conditions. Sometimes, the scientists worked with very thin gloves with latex gloves on the top when dealing with samples.

Thermal leggings make up the base layer that the team wore the whole time, even at night. They would sleep in leggings and a thermal top. Changing clothes happened a few times during the expedition, but it takes a brave person to take their clothes off at -40C, so this didn't happen too often.

This thermal top and many of the clothes worn by the team are made from synthetic materials. These dry quickly and also draw moisture away from the skin. In recent years, companies have developed base layers made from merino wool. Wool tends to smell less if someone hasn't changed their clothes for a while. Many of the team now use merino wool!
