Ages 10+

10 minutes

This activity supports learning about ocean habitats and the adaptation of the living things that inhabit them. Students follow clues to identify the names of then different examples of ocean life.

Set up

Each student or small group will need access to a connected device (e.g. laptop or tablet) to view the Ocean life interactive diagram, and the Activity Sheet Ocean life treasure hunt answers (downloadable from the What You’ll Need section).

The Slideshow Ocean life treasure hunt (downloadable from the What You’ll Need section) provides the structure for the treasure hunt. In a classroom set up, the slideshow can be displayed at the front of the class. For individual set ups, you will need a second device to display the slideshow.

Activity steps
  1. Check that each student or group can access the interactive diagram and has their answers sheet ready. They will also need to be able to view the slideshow either at the front of the classroom or on a second device.
  2. Run through and clarify the instructions on slide 2.
  3. Before the clues begin, students will have two minutes to familiarise themselves with the range of ocean life on the interactive diagram. After two minutes has finished, the clue slides will automatically transition, so be on the lookout.
NB make sure that you are displaying the slides in Slide Show mode. On most devices this can be accessed from the Slide Show menu or by pressing F5 on a PC.
  4. For each clue slide, there are 30 seconds in total to write down the answer on the sheet. Students should also write the number of points showing once they have decided on their final answer.
  5. The slides will transition automatically through all ten sets of clues.
  6. Once the clue slides have finished, it is time to click through the answer slides and tally up the total number of points.
Extension

There is a full lesson exploring the relationship between ocean life and their habitats to explore these themes more fully.
